LA Food Policy Council: Revitalizing L.A. with the Healthy Neighborhood Markets Network
LAFPC’s Healthy Neighborhood Markets Network program is on a mission to turn local neighborhood markets and corner stores into vibrant hubs of health and wellness in area known to be food deserts in Los Angeles County. Our goal? To create branding that represented and radiated these community anchors as hubs of well-being that are more than just a place to shop but are representative of the people who live in these communities and their need for nutritious food options.
During this project, we worked on three markets: Emma’s Meat Market, Venus Food Stores, and The Community Bodega (formerly known as Metro Mart)

Process & Challenge
During our research, we uncovered a strong appreciation within the community for healthy food, paired with a deep-seated desire for more accessible options. This understanding became the cornerstone of our design development process. We translated these community insights into vibrant, energetic branding that truly reflected the local spirit. By crafting bold and colorful logos, along with identity elements that captured the community’s vitality, we ensured that the branding was not only visually striking but also meaningful to those it represented. Through an iterative process, we refined the designs based on feedback from store owners, making sure the final outcomes resonated deeply with both them and the wider community.

Outcome & Impact
In the end, the project was a resounding success. The newly branded stores now stand as vibrant, welcoming hubs for health and wellness in their communities. The branding not only reflects the energy and passion of the people behind these businesses but also serves as an open invitation for the community to engage with these vital resources. We are proud of the work we've done and the lasting impact it will have on the Good Food Movement across Los Angeles. Along the way, we also gained reflective insights on how to improve future projects, such as developing a branding lookbook or IKEA-style catalog that outlines available design options based on each store’s individual budget. This project exemplifies the power of design to not just create beautiful visuals, but to inspire and empower communities.
